Beginning with a contrast between the habitus of the Germans in the nineteenth century and into the twentieth, as delineated by Norbert Elias most especially in his work, The Germans, this essay seeks to explain the civic and aggressive behavior of the men in the towns and the cities of Colombia during the violence of the 1950s. If the personality structures of the Germans express and reflect a strictly hierarchical society of command and obedience, the hierarchical distinctions in Colombia are lived in ambivalent, flexible, soft, uncertain and volatile experiences. If the Germans knew daily where they stood in relationship to others, the Colombian men, Conservatives and Liberals, especially in the local and national contexts of the extreme partisan uncertainties that begin in 1946, live a constant anxiety that leads them to express themselves with respectful elegance and visceral aggression.
