This article analyses how the discourse about the mestizaje is used by immigrants in order to legitimize their rights to lands that historically have been part of Indian territories in three mestizas communities in the agricultural frontier of the RAAS (Región Autónoma del Atlántico Sur). In the description of social dynamics of this area, contradictions of the discourse about mestizaje are emphasized. These contradictions reveal the racist and inegalitarian discourses that are present in the construction of the Nicaraguan nation.
