Se tratan algunos de los conceptos fundamentales de las disciplinas métricas, así como su origen y desarrollo. Se analizan los principales aspectos teóricos de los análisis cuantitativos y su importancia para explicar los procesos que llevaron al desarrollo de dichos análisis. Se realizan ciertas valoraciones sobre los fundamentos y los componentes básicos de estas disciplinas, útiles para comprender sus potencialidades para los centros de información y bibliotecas.
Fundamental concepts on metric disciplines were treated as well as its origin and development. The main theoric aspects of the quantitative analysis and their importance to explain the process that led to the development of them were analysed. Many valorations about the fundaments and basic components of these disciplines, useful to understand their potentialities for the information centers and libraries were carried out.
