Populism is a socio-political phenomenon with a long history in Argentina. While, since the nineties, it has tended solely to refer to the presidencies of Carlos Menem and, more recently, Mr. and Mrs. Kirchner, the term "populism" can also be applied to the governments that held power in the first half of the 2Oth century, following both the modernisation of Argentine society and also the crisis in the agricultural export model, such as the government of Hipólito Irigoyen, or that of Juan Domingo Perón. Given the difficulty in producing a definition of the concept of populism the article attempts to clarify its meaning by examining the political question in Argentina from a genealogical perspective. This view allows us to analyse the key elements associated with the rise of this kind of politics, its specific features and also its consequences.
