En la década de 1990 tuvo lugar una profunda reconversión tecnológica de la exhibición de cine en salas, fruto de la cual España logró situarse a la cabeza de la Unión Europea en número de multiplexes y megaplexes, así como de pantallas por habitante. Actualmente, el evidente agotamiento de este modelo de exhibición en macrocomplejos de cine obliga al sector a idear nuevas fórmulas que permitan seguir atrayendo al público hacia estos grandes recintos.
The decade of the nineties brought about an extensive conversion of film projection in novie theaters. Following this, Spain became the top European Union country in number of miltiplex theaters and mega-theaters, as well as in number of escreens per capital. Currently, the clear extinction of this projection model in macro theater complexes is forcing the sector to come up with new formulas in order to continue to attract audieces to these alrge venues.
