El presente artículo se propone realizar una reseña histórica de la forma en que la psicología, a través de una de sus más recientes ramas, la psicología ambiental, ha abordado el estudio de la ciudad. Se presentan dos momentos distintos: los orígenes conductuales del estudio de la ciudad y las tendencias fenomenologías que hacen énfasis en la cognición. Se ¡lustran ambas posturas, al igual que algunas teorías intermedias, a través de sus fundamentos teóricos y metodológicos, y se establece la tendencia contemporánea a sostener la tesis de la ciudad como una abstracción o un estado cognitivo.
The aim of the present paper is to make an historical review of the way in which psychology, through one of its most new areas, environmental psychology, has studied the city. Two different moments have appeared in this approach: The first, behavioral studies of the city and second, the phenomenological tendencies that have made emphasis in cognition. These positions, as well as some intermedíate theories, were analyzed through its methodological and theorical foundations, and the thesis about the city as an abstraction or cognitive state, was settle down.
