The garden represents a phenomenon of great interest not only at the mores¿s sphere but also in the development of the urban structure. At ¿the italic house¿ the garden belongs to the housing¿s architecture, and even the compluvium-impluvium is conceived as a cistern for the supply of water to its inhabitants and the garden. With regard to the ager publicus assigned to the veterans, this often consists of tiny portions that are practically reduced for the type of intensive urban, vegetable garden attached to a house. An additional step in the evolution of the hortus¿s identity is found in Cato¿s agronomy treatise, which distinguishes between the suburban garden and the garden attached to the villa (already included as a farming exploitation).
