I, a Moslem, in Christian Europe [KHALED FOUAD ALLAM] In the midst of the process of configuration of the new rules of the constitutional game in the European Union, the author ¿a Moslem, and of Arab culture¿ provides some food for thought on the Christian roots of our continent. The questions at stake are multiple and complex, but this one is pivotal: the foundations of European identity. At this moment in time, we are all aware of Europeans, but not of Europe: Joan Paul II's rallying call around the Christian roots of the continent takes on great importance and calls for much more than a simple historic and cultural reading. It is not really a constitution that is being debated, but rather a European convention, i.e., a pact calling on us to reconsider the reasons why we remain united and why we share a series of values; an agreement which explores how a political space that is being built can also be regarded as a space of hopes. If, through the question on Christian roots, politics invites us to interpret and think to understand and build, the word market is a kind of leitmotiv throughout the text of the convention, without this ever having given rise to any type of reflection. The question of the Christian roots of Europe, at a time when everyone talks about the heterogeneity of cultures and the multiethnic phenomenon, poses other problems: how can we welcome someone else if we reject or deny ourselves? How can we reach a pact between human communities if Europe refuses to recognise itself?
