A decisive box [MAR PONS] The quality of television contents has always been a controversial issue, although when the spectators are children there are many variables that may impact the education of children and young people that should be taken into account. Statistical studies on television and infancy are the point of departure of the article by Mar Pons, coordinator of the programmes analysis group of Telespectadors Associats de Catalunya. As she states, television has become such a familiar element that seldom, or never, do we think of it as a tool for education or "de-education". Why are there hardly any children's programmes in a timeslot when children see most television? Are the programmes offered by television best suited to the education of children? The author says that the audience of children and young people are the subject television programmers have still to pass, both in terms of the quality of contents offered and in the actual programmes, which, while not targeting children, can be viewed by them as they are broadcast at peak viewing times. This issue not only affects parents, it also impacts teachers and educators. The author analyses the TV watching habits of children and adolescents, as well as the programmes offered by national channels, pointing out shortcomings, criticising excesses, and winds up by offering some pointers on how to foster awareness of responsibility for audiovisual education in the home.
