The extreme right in Spain: a European exception? [XAVIER CASALS] In the course of the eighties and the nineties, numerous countries in Europe witnessed the development of extreme right-wing parties which had their electoral ups and downs, some of the most outstanding examples being the French National Front and Austrian Liberal Party. In this regard, there is one question we might ask: why does Spain have no extreme right wing party with Parliamentary representation? Why, after 25 years of democracy, has the extreme right fallen into a process of decline rather than of resurgence? This article aims to answer this question by analysing different factors and addressing certain hypotheses. Although the non-existence of an extreme right wing in Spain is largely due to the absorption of this movement into the conservative parties, this may, according to the author, change in the short term. Xavier Casals is a historian, a doctor in history and one of the most prominent experts in extreme right movements. He has lectured at the Universitat Ramon Llull, and recently published Ultrapatriots. Extreme right and nationalism from the Cold war until the era of globalisation (Crítica, 2003). This article presents the underlying reasons of why the extreme right has been marginal in countries where apparently it might have had solid political and electoral bases, such as Spain, and on the other hand has spread in other countries with a solid democratic tradition.
