The democratic idea: status and threats [ARMANDO BORDA HERRADA] How can we strengthen democracy? What are its most important threats? These answers form the point of departure for Armando Borda, member of the Instituto de Estudios Social Cristianos, of Perú, to address the democratic idea, its status and its threats. The author sees the importance of democracy as a way of life as a key factor, as well as its relationship with young people, education and the media. The promotion of democracy is closely linked to the participation of individuals in their environment and how they relate to their fellow men, working towards the common good. In many countries of the world people have yet to learn what democracy actually is. Democracy must be learnt, understood and interiorised. It is not something that is external to people, it must be present in people's minds. In this regard, the thesis of Armando Borda is that a democracy cannot exist without democratic education or young people. Not only must democracy be based on young people, it must demand their participation. This approach entails the need for the different actors that make up society, and the State institutions, to talk to each other and facilitate the integration of young people to the benefit of democracy as a whole. Thus, the State and society as a whole must make sure that these opportunities are within reach of most young people, thus creating a suitable setting for the development of people in democracy. Investing in young people is an investment in us all, the common good or the future of democracy.
