Reflections on the present and the future of Christian democracy [JOAN-LLUÍS PÉREZ FRANCESCH] The article by Dr. Joan-Lluís Pérez, lecturer in constitutional law at the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona, and acting on behalf of the Institut d'Estudis Humanístics Miguel Coll i Alentorn, proposes an in-depth reflection on Christian democracy as an ideology and as a political movement. One outstanding point he makes is that throughout the 20th Century, Christian democracy has been one of the most important ideologies in Europe and in Latin America, where it has enjoyed special relevance. It has played a pivotal role in the building of Europe and in the development of the democratic system of many countries. One of its main traits has been its leaders' capacity to dialogue. At the same time, by forming an ideological body, an elaborate doctrine, it afforded security and convictions to militants of the Christian democrat cause in order to build a community based on dialogue with other political forces. According to the author, a task where the vision of the general interest prevailed over purely party interests. Christian democracy has therefore enjoyed a role of paramount importance in the building of many European countries, the EU itself and in the political ordering of the Latin American countries. But might we say that the success of its approaches has drained the content of its programmes? Would we therefore be dealing with a crisis that would be the result of the success achieved and not a failure? Does the failure lie in the mistake of continuing to be bound to circumstantial strategies when the social and political setting has undergone substantial variations? Are new responses from the basic principles of Christian democracy possible?
