Tot i això, el camí és encara llarg.
Energy sustainability and sustainable development [XAVIER ORTEGA ARAMBURU] Ten years after the famous convention in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), where, for the first time ever, a large number of countries took on the challenge of progressing towards sustainable development, Dr. Ortega, director of the Institute of Energy Techniques of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, appraises progress and setbacks. As the author states, the idea of sustainable development is no longer the flagship of a small number of social movements. Society in general, and many governments, have taken up the gauntlet of energy sustainability and sustainable development. Even so, there is still a lot to be done. Despite the great declarations of intent of many western countries, the road ahead is still a very long one. As the author asserts, new and old concepts have scaled positions on political agendas: the certainty of the provision of primary sources of energy, energy efficiency, renewable energies, the liberalisation of markets, technological research and innovation in the energy sector, energy and the environment, etc. Despite all this, the author considers that without lobbying by citizens in issues of sustainable development, progress will be greatly limited.
