Approaching and developing the democracy [A RESEARCH BY THE STANDING SEMINARY OF HISTORY OF POLITICAL AND SOCIAL THOUGHT, INEHCA] Starting from the premise: democracy constitutes the only principle of legitimacy for the organisation of social life, democracy becomes a proposal with a universal vocation which claims more than ever for a correct and agreed understanding. Nowadays it is not enough to repeat 'Winston Churchill's sentence "Democracy is the worst of the political systems... if we leave out of the account the rest of the systems" The closing stages of the 20th century have assisted to the change of direction of the history, as the prestigious politologist Giovanni Sartori would say, and democracy has become the only conceivable and acceptable proposal of coexistence for many people in the world. The importance of this condition is what obliges us to make the unavoidable effort of rethinking the democracy starting from its constitutive and defining traits. And rethinking the democracy implies, for us, not only deepening it, but also developing it.
