Franciscanism, new challenges and new generations [JORDI CERVERA] Francis of Assisi, eight centuries on, is still a pleasant and attractive figure, and for many he is an icon with clear influences which go beyond pure faith or the strictly catholic setting. In this article, the author uses key elements of his personality and his history to expound what to his mind are some of the most important challenges facing western society, a consumerism-driven society which is somewhat bereft of a spiritual dimension. Nevertheless, and almost in contrast, he believes that there has been a change in the generations born as of the eighties, which seem to be more receptive to spiritual values, and with a clear awareness of solidarity and globality. The author believes that in this scenario the Church faces a series of challenges that must be tackled, perhaps with the help of these new values that reject dogmatic assertion and excessive ritual, but which has a transcendental and supportive conscience that embraces equality and is against poverty. To do so, the author describes some of the characteristic elements of "the Franciscan spirit", by nature non-conformist and dissatisfied, albeit imbued with positivism and a total faith in people.
