This article delves into the analysis of symbolic and discursive violence directed at women writers associated with critical gender feminism in digital media. The focus is on the linguistic and ideological debate sparked by the categorization of writer Carolina Sanín as a terf. Conducted between August and November 2022, this digital ethnography employs a situated thinking methodology (Gago, 2022) and analyzes language debates (Blommaert, 1999) through a study corpus comprising tweets, reports, and opinion columns. For the discussion, I adopt Volosinov’s (1986) conceptualization of the sign as dynamic and social, assessing the tangible impact of insults from Judith Butler´s (2004) perspective. The argument posits that Carolina Sanín and other feminists labeled as terfs are cast as scapegoats within feminism, potentially swaying individuals from the moveable center toward discourses aligning with the right. In essence, this study explores the intersection of language, ideology, and contemporary feminism, while advocating for denouncing transphobia and hate speech without resorting to aggression. The transformative potential of feminism is acknowledged due to its massiveness and radicalism.
