La identificación de las poblaciones afrodescendientes contemporáneas en México y su reconocimiento como parte de la diversidad étnica en el país es una tarea en la agenda gubernamental muy reciente. Las acciones gubernamentales responden a procesos históricos de largo aliento y también, en buena medida, a coyunturas políticas en distintas escalas y tiempos que a poco más de una década se intensificaron. Este artículo es una mirada retrospectiva sobre algunos factores coyunturales que favorecieron en un momento la visibilización de la población afromexicana, su incorporación en la agenda gubernamental y su posterior reconocimiento constitucional en el año 2019. De manera particular, el interés es centrar la atención sobre las articulaciones políticas de liderazgos indígenas con la movilización afromexicana. El año internacional afrodescendiente en 2011 se establece como un punto sincrónico y coyuntural que servirá para mostrar la confluencia de tensiones y articulaciones. El recurso analítico para hacer el acercamiento a este momento y espacio es la escala, concepto desarrollado en la geografía humana, pertinente para referirse no sólo a una localización, sino como esquema interpretativo. Las fuentes que sostienen la argumentación se vinculan al trabajo etnográfico realizado entre 2011 y 2019 en la región de la Costa Chica de Oaxaca, archivo documental de la región e historiografía especializada en el tema.
The identification of contemporary Afro-descendant populations in Mexico and their recognition as part of the country's ethnic diversity is a recent task on the government agenda. Official actions respond to long-standing historical processes and politicalconjunctures at different scales and times, which intensified a little over a decade ago. This article offers a retrospective look at some of the factors that favored the visibilisation of the Afro-Mexican population, its inclusion in the governmental agenda and its subsequent constitutional recognition in 2019. In particular, it focuses on the political articulations between indigenous leaderships and the Afro-Mexican mobilization and the shift in the collective struggle with the emergence of female leaderships. The International Year for People of African Descent in 2011 is established as a synchronic and conjunctural point that shows the confluence of tensions and articulations. The analytical resource to address this moment and space is scale, a conceptdeveloped in human geography, relevant to refer not only to a location, but also as an interpretative scheme. The sources that support the argumentation are linked to the ethnographic work carried out between 2011 and 2019 in the Costa Chica region of Oaxaca, documentary archives of the region and historiography specializing in the subject.
