Este artículo describe la naturaleza y alcance del clivaje utilizando cinco precondiciones o cláusulas que sirven, a su vez, de protocolo para la observación del conflicto estructural y su desarrollo teórico-conceptual. Las cláusulas per-miten analizar dos tópicos clásicos: 1) el asunto del clivaje “dormido” o “latente” y 2) el trata-miento metodológico de los potenciales nuevos clivajes. El artículo concluye analizando, por un lado, el rol que el modelo teórico del clivaje des-empeña en la teoría democrática y, por otro, la relación superpuesta que existe entre el clivaje y el concepto de polarización
This paper describes the nature and scope of the cleavage using five preconditions or clauses that serve, in turn, as a protocol for the observation of structural conflict and its theoretical-con-ceptual development. The clauses allow the analysis of two classic topics: the issue of “latent” cleavage and the methodological treatment of potential new cleavages. The paper concludes by analyzing, on the one hand, the role that the the-oretical model of cleavage plays in democratic theory and, on the other hand, the overlapping relationship between cleavage and the concept of polarization
