Este artículo tiene como objetivo analizar los cambios en la jerarquía de ciudades de la región Nordeste de Brasil, a partir de la década de 1990. Para ello, se consideran las configuraciones y tendencias de la red urbana del Nordeste, asociando una perspectiva diacrónica (dinámica) sobre el comportamiento de la red urbana con una perspectiva sincrónica, relativa a los aspectos formales y funcionales que califican la jerarquía entre las ciudades y la centralidad de la oferta de determinados servicios. Metodológicamente, se utilizan los indicadores relacionados con la evolución de la jerarquía urbana (niveles de centralidad) y el volumen de activos financieros para el conjunto de municipios que pertenecen a la red urbana regional. Se concluye que la (re)estructuración de la red urbana y las tendencias del desarrollo urbano-regional en el Nordeste post-1990 permiten captar diferentes dinámicas económico-espaciales, revelando “diversos Nordestes urbanos”.
This article aims to analyze changes in the hierarchy of cities in the Northeast region of Brazil, from the 1990s onwards. For this purpose, the configurations and trends of the urban network in the Northeast are considered, associating a diachronic (dynamic) perspective on the behavior of the urban network to a synchronic perspective, relative to the formal and functional aspects that qualify the hierarchy between cities and the cen-trality of the offer of certain services. Methodologically, indicators related to the evolution of the urban hierarchy (levels of centrality) and the volume of financial assets for the set of municipalities that belong to the regional urban network are used. It is concluded that the (re)structuring of the urban network and the urban-regional development trends in the Northeast, post-1990, allow us to capture different economic-spatial dynamics, revealing “several urban Northeasts”.
