The European Commission adopted important legislative provisions under the European Green Deal such as the introduction of sustainable marine and aviation fuels with ultimate goal the decarbonisation of the transport sector and the development of zero-emission vehicles and green ships in order to mitigate the negative impact on climate and the environment. The international response for measures to decarbonise shipping came from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) which reviewed on 7th July 2023 its Initial Strategy on the reduction of GHG emissions from ships, with the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy that represents the continuation of work by IMO.
The European Commission put in place a common framework for the promotion of energy from renewable sources in the EU and established greenhouse gas emissions saving criteria for biofuels, bioliquids and biomass fuels.
