Este artículo es la primera parte de un trabajo sobre la figura del oficial de Artillería catalán Joaquín Planell Riera. A través de su trayectoria profesional y de la de un pequeño grupo de actores relacionados con él se contribuirá a esclarecer los orígenes del programa español de guerra química y, especialmente, la hasta ahora desconocida contribución de personal, centros e industrias de Cataluña. En concreto, se reconstruirán las iniciativas tempranas de Planell en relación con las dos principales infraestructuras militares de producción de gases que se crearon en España durante la Guerra del Rif: el Taller de Gases de Melilla y la Fábrica de Productos Químicos de la Marañosa.
This article is the first part of a work on the figure of the Catalan Artillery officer Joaquín Planell Riera. Through his professional career and that of a small group of actors related to him, most of them military, we will contribute to clarifying the origins and development of the Spanish chemical warfare program and, in particular, the hitherto unknown contribution of Catalonia-based personnel, institutions, and industries. In this article, we will specifically reconstruct Planell’s early initiatives in relation to the two main military gas production infrastructures set up in Spain during the Rif War in Morocco: the Melilla Gas Workshop and the Marañosa Chemical Products Factory.
