The present study, following an action-research methodology, involved 25 students from a bilingual 1st-grade class and aimed to investigate the influence of using interlocking cubes, one of the resources mentioned in the Essential Mathematics Learning (2021), on the development of numerical sense and mathematical abilities. Simultaneously, through the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach, the goal was to enhance the children’s cognitive development and language acquisition in an immersive learning environment that promotes soft skills. The results revealed that the manipulation of materials facilitated oral counting and object counting, as well as the establishment of numerical relationships through multiple representations of numbers. There was progress in the relationship between addition and subtraction. The highlighted mathematical skills included representations, communication, and reasoning, emphasizing the effectiveness of integrating CLIL principles to improve mathematical learning outcomes and foster positive attitudes towards the language.
O presente estudo, seguindo metodologia de investigação-ação, envolveu 25 alunos de uma turma bilingue do 1.º ano, teve como principal objetivo estudar a influência do recurso cubos encaixáveis, um dos mencionados nas Aprendizagens Essenciais de Matemática (2021), no desenvolvimento do sentido numérico e capacidades matemáticas. Paralelamente, através da abordagem de Aprendizagem Integrada de Conteúdo e Língua (CLIL), procurou-se melhorar o desenvolvimento cognitivo e a aquisição de linguagem das crianças, através de um ambiente de aprendizagem imersivo e promotor de soft skills. Os resultados revelaram que a manipulação de materiais facilitou a contagem oral e de objetos, bem como o estabelecimento de relações numéricas através de múltiplas representações de números. Houve progresso na relação entre adição e subtração. As habilidades matemáticas destacadas incluíram representações, comunicação e raciocínio, com ênfase na eficácia da integração de princípios CLIL para melhorar os resultados de aprendizagem matemática e fomentar atitudes positivas em relação à língua
