Reading is a key to understand and envision the challenges libraries have to face in the future and starting from now on. Considering librarianship works as well as sociological studies of these present times, this work tries to describe a library in which different types of reading become central and lead to a new way to live the spaces of our libraries. The speed and chaotic reality we live in may open remarkable opportunities for libraries: the increasing demand of places free from competition or permanent connection should be answered, libraries being public “third places” of priceless potential, offering welcoming and peaceful spaces also in order to slow down. In this view reading untied from instant interest becomes central and an opportunity to inhabit time in a different way: the future for libraries has to be reading – oriented.
