Certification in tourism can serve both as a stimulus to improve the management of tourism resources and as an incentive for visitors, since they often offer a guarantee of good tourist experiences. In this regard, it is necessary to conduct research that shows the characteristics of tourism certification systems in destinations. The objective of this article is to describe tourism certification systems in the Americas. For the study, a total of 59 tourism certification systems in the continent were considered, with global, subglobal, national, regional and local operational levels. The methodology was based on documentary research, qualitative and quantitative characterization of the certification systems, using descriptive statistics and the SPSS program for data processing. Among the results, it was obtained that the largest certified category in the continent is “Accommodation Providers”; “United States” has the largest number of certification programs; the predominant operational level among the certification systems is “Regional”. It is concluded that many countries in America use the same global system criteria to build their national tourism certification programs, in line with the environmental and tourism policies of each country
La certificación en el turismo puede servir tanto de estímulo para mejorar la gestión de los recursos turísticos como de incentivo para los visitantes, puesto que a menudo ofrecen garantía de buenas experiencias turísticas. En tal sentido, es necesario realizar investigaciones que muestren las características de los sistemas de certificación turística en los destinos. El objetivo de este artículo es describir los sistemas de certificación turísticas en las Américas. Para el estudio se consideró un total de 59 sistemas de certificación turística en el continente, con niveles operativos globales, subglobales, nacionales, regionales y locales. La metodología se sustentó en una investigación de tipo documental, caracterización cualitativa y cuantitativa de los sistemas de certificación, utilizando la estadística descriptiva y el programa SPSS para el procesamiento de los datos. Entre los resultados se obtuvo que la mayor categoría certificada en el continente es “Proveedores de alojamiento”; “Estados Unidos” posee el mayor número de programas de certificación; el nivel operativo predominante entre los sistemas de certificación es el “Regional”. Se concluye que, muchos países de América utilizan los mismos criterios de sistemas globales para construir sus programas de certificación turística nacionales, en línea con las políticas ambientales y turísticas propias de cada país.
