    Explicitly written to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the Portuguese carnation revolution, the paper aims at following, presenting and explaining the historiographical motif known as the “juridical conscience of the University of Coimbra” as far as it relates to Francisco Suárez’s work, De Legibus. Without confusing the anthropological and political dimension of Suarez's proposal with the interpretation made by the 20th century Portuguese politician Mário Soares on Suárez and the latter’s theory of the origin of political power, the paper highlights a connection between the two topics and the two authors, viz. the imperative of human liberation as the response to any advancement of the relative as absolute.

    O presente estudo – assumidamente escrito para celebrar os 50 anos do 25 de abril –acompanha e explica o motivo historiográfico conhecido como “consciência jurídica da Universidade de Coimbra”, associado à obra de Francisco Suárez, De Legibus. Não confundindo a dimensão antropológica e política da proposta suareziana com a alusão que o político português Mário Soares fez a Suárez e à teoria da origem popular do poder político, o presente artigo vinca, contudo, uma ligação entre os dois tópicos e os dois autores, a saber, o imperativo da libertação humana como resposta a qualquer avanço do relativo enquanto absoluto.
