The aim of this article is to try to make the debate on the concept of institution, within the socalled “institutional turn”, react with Marxian theory. Despite the shared conceptual ground, such an encounter has not taken place in a systematic way. The institutional turn's internal debate has primarily focused on the connection between political anthropology and the theory of institutions. Although Marx appears from time to time as a more or less central reference, his perspective is rarely recognized for the distinct methodological autonomy of the materialist critique of law. This article argues that the difference of the Marxian method lies in the central role played by anthropological mutation and social ontology.
