The Black Death, a pandemic that spread across Eurasia and North Africa between 1347 and 1352, left demographic, economic and social traces in the various kingdoms and cities it affected. In Portugal, it was particularly felt in the second half of 1348 and in the following year, King Afonso IV promulgated laws aimed at responding to the problems of declining production, taking into account the decrease in the labour force, work, and the climate of social instability that existed. A similar policy occurred in other kingdoms, notably in England, with the Ordinance of Labourers decreed by Edward III. Afonso IV summoned the cortes to Lisbon in 1352, with the objective of overcoming the crisis. The complaints of the people were exposed in this assembly, which allows us to understand a strong confrontation of powers. This article analyzes these popular complaints and the political decisions of the sovereign who sought to rebalance the economy of the kingdom and to control the excesses of the different social forces with a view to restoring order, normality of production and social peace of the kingdom, essential to the pursuit of its firm policy of asserting royal power
La peste noire, une pandémie qui s'est propagée à travers l'Eurasie et l'Afrique du Nord entre 1347 et 1352, a laissé des traces démographiques, économiques et sociales dans les différents royaumes et villes qu'elle a touché. Au Portugal, elle se fait particulièrement sentir dans la seconde moitié de 1348. Et immédiatement l'année suivante, le roi Afonso IV promulgue des lois visant à répondre aux problèmes de la baisse de la production, compte tenu de la diminution de la main-d'œuvre, et du climat d'instabilité sociale qui existait. Une politique similaire s'est produite dans d'autres royaumes, notamment en Angleterre, avec l’Ordinance of Labourers décrétée par Edouard III. Toujours avec les mêmes objectifs de surmonter la crise, Afonso IV convoqua cortes à Lisbonne en 1352. Et dans cette assemblée, le peuple a exposé ses maux, qui nous permettent de comprendre une forte confrontation des pouvoirs. Dans cette étude, nous analyserons ces plaintes populaires et les décisions politiques du souverain qui cherchaient à rééquilibrer l'économie du royaume et à contrôler les excès des différentes forces sociales en vue de rétablir l'ordre, la normalité de la production et la paix sociale du royaume, indispensables à la poursuite de sa ferme politique d'affirmation du pouvoir royal.
