El artículo realiza un análisis de la evolución de la moderna teoría del desarrollo, desde sus orígenes hasta la actualidad. Al efecto, revisa las principales contribuciones del núcleo inicial de la disciplina, reivindicando algunas de sus intuiciones. Así mismo, destaca las nuevas líneas de investigación y el renovado estilo de trabajo intelectual que se abre a partir de la década de 1990. Un estilo que ha permitido un diálogo más activo con otras tradiciones del pensamiento económico, un afán por fundamentar analíticamente sus hipótesis y un mayor esfuerzo por validarlas empíricamente. Con ello se han diluido en parte las fronteras caracterizadoras de la teoría del desarrollo, pero, a cambio, se ha consolidado un dinámico y fecundo campo de investigación en economía aplicada.
The article conducts an analysis of the evolution of modern development theory, from its origins to the present. In doing so, it reviews the main contributions of the initial core of the discipline, underlining some of its main intuitions. It also highlights the new lines of research and the renewed style of intellectual work that emerged from the 1990s. This style has allowed for a more active dialogue with other traditions of economic thought, a searching for a better analytical ground for its hypotheses, and a greater effort to validate them empirically. As a result, the defining boundaries of development theory have, to some extent, blurred. However, in exchange, a dynamic and fruitful field of research in applied economics has been consolidated
