Taking as a reference the scheme of the three messages proposed by Roland Barthes, we analyzed the front pages of two Ecuadorian newspapers (one generalist and the other sensationalist) to find out how they presented on their front pages a news item about the rape of a teenage girl on a school bus. The findings suggest that images invisibilize from presence and that language does so from the denial of women’s agency.
