Nicaragua experimentó las colonizaciones española y británica, además de distintos mestizajes. Pero en el imaginario, el mestizaje refiere únicamente al cruce entre lo indígena e hispano. Este artículo discute comparativamente el discurso y la experiencia de los proyectos de la Nicaragua mestiza (1894-1987) y la multiétnica, que desde 1987 reconoce que el pueblo nicaragüense es indígena, afrodescendiente y mestizo. Se argumenta que el proyecto de la Nicaragua mestiza sigue latente y cuenta con los mecanismos políticos-económicos-culturales que podrían eliminar a los indígenas y afrodescendientes de la Costa Caribe.
Nicaragua experienced Spanish-British colonization and various miscegenations. But in the hegemonic imaginary, miscegenation refers only to the cross between the indigenous and Hispanic. This article comparatively discusses the discourse and experience of the project of mestizo Nicaragua (1894-1987) that standardizes the people with the mestizo ethnicity and the project of multiethnic Nicaragua (1987-2019) recognizes that the people of Nicaragua are indigenous, Afro-descendant and mestizo. It is argued that the project of mestizo Nicaragua is still valid and has the political-economic-cultural mechanisms that could eliminate the indigenous and Afro-descendants of the Caribbean Coast.
