Han pasado ya más de cinco años desde la derrota del Daesh en Iraq y, pese a la gravedad de los hechos y de que empleó tácticas de tierra quemada, muchos de sus impactos aún no se han afrontado ni los crímenes medioambientales han sido investigados aún de manera adecuada, en particular de forma oficial por el órgano idóneo para ello, que es UNITAD (el equipo de investigaciones establecido por el Consejo de Seguridad de las Naciones Unidas en septiembre de 2017). En consecuencia, ni se ha podido hacer justicia ni tampoco se ha reparado a las víctimas de forma que puedan ponerse los pilares de una paz sostenible. Por ello, este trabajo se propone indagar en algunos de los aspectos relevantes que se conectan con la falta de esclarecimiento de tales actos criminales, la consiguiente ausencia de justicia y reparación, así como la necesidad de visibilizar todo ello. A la vez, también se pretende mostrar la existencia de otros aspectos que van más allá, pero que están interrelacionados, y que vuelven aún la situación más compleja, como son los efectos del cambio climático. Teniendo todo ello en cuenta, se exploran posibles vías, incluyendo la conveniencia de emplear herramientas innovadoras para la construcción de paz ambiental.
Five years have passed since the defeat of Daesh in Iraq and, despite the seriousness of the events and its use of scorched earth tactics, many of their impacts have not been addressed yet nor have environmental crimes been properly investigated, in particular officially, by the appropriate body for it, which is UNITAD (the investigative team established by the United Nations Security Council in September 2017). Consequently, justice has not been served nor has there been reparation for the victims, in such a way that the pillars of a sustainable peace could be laid. For this reason, this paper intends to investigate some of the relevant aspects that are connected with the lack of clarification of such criminal acts, the consequent absence of justice and reparation, as well as the need to make all of this visible. At the same time, it also aims to show the existence of other aspects that go further, but are interrelated, and that make the situation even more complex, such as the effects of climate change. Taking all this into account, new possible ways are explored, including the convenience of using innovative tools for environmental peacebuilding.
