Este artículo examina las narrativas de treinta y tres ex narcotraficantes y analiza cómo conciben la violencia del narcotráfico. A través de un análisis del discurso, el estudio identifica cuatro significados diferentes adjudicados a esta violencia: a) la violencia del narcotráfico como un negocio; b) la violencia como regla básica del narcotráfico; c) la violencia del narcotráfico como fuente de adrenalina y empoderamiento; y d) la violencia del narcotráfico ligada al culto de la Santa Muerte. La relevancia de identificar y entender estas dimensiones radica en que cada una de ellas responde a diferentes objetivos, lo que implica que se necesitan diferentes políticas públicas para prevenir y combatir la violencia del narcotráfico.
This paper examines the narratives of thirty-three former drug traffi ckers and analyses how they portray drug traffi cking violence. Using a discourse analysis approach, this study reveals four diff erent meanings att ached to this violence: a) drug traffi cking violence as a business; b) violence as the ground rules of drug traffi cking; c) drug traffi cking violence as a source of adrenaline and empowerment, and; d) drug traffi cking violence linked to the cult of the Holy Dead. Identifying and understanding each of these dimensions has significant implications for policy design. As this paper shows, each dimension has distinct origins, and serves a diff erent purpose; therefore, each of them requires a different policy-making strategy for their containment and prevention.
