El artículo aborda las influencias de Estados Unidos sobre José Martí, quien observó a este país desde temprana edad. Admiró sus instituciones políticas democráticas y el origen de las mismas desde el proceso de independencia contra Inglaterra y sus resultados que se plasmaron en la Constitución norteamericana de 1787: de carácter liberal acorde a los principios de la Ilustración, así como la labor desarrollada por los padres fundadores de esta nación. Aunque valoró a USA como el paradigma de sociedad democrática en el siglo XIX, criticó sus vicios y dificultades. A través de sus obras literarias concluyó que su sistema político era corrupto, desde las elecciones hasta los partidos en el poder, el tratamiento a las masas populares y a los inmigrantes, la pobreza y el afán desmedido por la riqueza y el lucro, el carácter imperialista de su política exterior, reflejado en el creciente interés por el dominio de América Latina, expresado en la Conferencia Monetaria Internacional Americana de 1890 y el Congreso de Washington.
The article addresses the influences of the United States on José Martí, who observed this country from an early age. He admired his democratic political institutions and the origin of them from the process of independence against England and its results that were embodied in the American Constitution of 1787: liberal in accordance with the principles of the Enlightenment, as well as the work developed by parents founders of this nation. Although he valued the USA as the paradigm of democratic society in the nineteenth century, he criticized his vices and difficulties. Through his literary works he concluded that his political system was corrupt, from the elections to the parties in power, the treatment of the popular masses and immigrants, poverty and the excessive desire for wealth and profit, the impe rialist character of its foreign policy, reflected in the growing interest in Latin American domination, expressed in the 1890 International American Monetary Conference and the Washington Congress.
