    No se puede completar un panorama sobre las artes del libro en el Madrid contemporáneo sin analizar la historia y la relevancia en este campo que ha tenido la Imprenta Municipal. Su origen se remonta a mediados del siglo XIX.

    Creada como un centro de producción de impresos y de instrucción para los internos del Asilo de San Bernardino, ha recorrido un largo camino para llegar a ser ahora un centro cultural dedicado al libro, las artes gráficas y la cultura escrita. Resulta un interesante ejemplo de institución pública cuyo perfil ha evolucionado a lo largo de más de siglo y medio.

    En estos momentos la Imprenta Municipal, definida ya como un museo y centro patrimonial está recopilando su memoria histórica. Desde hace unos años se están desarrollando diversos programas para recoger los vestigios documentales de su nacimiento y evolución dentro de un proyecto global de investigación iniciado hace varios años y aún inconcluso. Enmarcada en el contexto de su nueva función la Imprenta Municipal afronta el rescate del patrimonio cultural ligado a la memoria de la institución y del lugar.

    It is not possible to complete a panorama on the arts of the book in contemporary Madrid without analyzing the history and the relevance in this field that the Municipal Printing has had. Its origin dates back to the mid-19th century. Created as a print production and training center for the inmates of the San Bernardino Asylum, it has come a long way to become now a cultural center dedicated to books, graphic arts and written culture. It is an interesting example of a public institution whose profile has evolved over more than a century and a half. At the moment, the Municipal Printing Office, already defined as a museum and heritage center, is collecting its historical memory. For some years, various programs have been developing to collect the documentary remains of its birth and evolution within a global research project started several years ago and still unfinished. Framed in the context of its new function, the Municipal Printing Office faces the rescue of the cultural heritage linked to the memory of the institution and the place.
