Lacan was not the only responsible for a theoretical revolution that overthrew the saussurian “algorithm” that resulted in the signifier prevailing over the signified. He clearly acknowledged his theoretical debt toward Lévi-Strauss. But the initiative of this lévi-straussian idea had its own origin. Saussure and structuralist phonology were not its only sources. It was under the influence of the anthropologist Franz Boas that Lévi-Strauss first found that the laws of language operate at an unconscious level out of reach of the control of speaking subjects. But it was only with Lacan that the question of the structural unconscious was explicitly addressed and the idea of the primacy of the signifier thereby demonstrated. It is unfortunate that Lévi-Strauss gave up the initiative of the idea; but it was for Lacan to discover this precious bounty.
Lacan n’est pas le seul responsable d’une révolution théorique renversant l’« algorithme » saussurien pour donner au signifiant la primauté sur le signifié. Il exprimait clairement sa dette théorique envers Lévi-Strauss. Mais l’initiative de l’idée lévi-straussienne a sa propre origine. Saussure et la phonologie structuraliste n’en sont pas la seule source. C’est sous l’influence de l’anthropologue Franz Boas que Lévi-Strauss trouve d’abord que les lois du langage fonctionnent au niveau inconscient en dehors du contrôle des sujets parlants. Mais ce n’est qu’avec Lacan que la question de l’inconscient structural est explicitement posée et l’idée de la primauté du signifiant démontrée par là. Il est regrettable que Lévi-Strauss ait alors abandonné l’initiative de l’idée et c’est Lacan qui en discerne le précieux trésor.
