The Association des archivistes du Québec (AAQ) had a marked influence on archival activities since its creation 50 years ago. This influence has already been examined from a disciplinary perspective. But, by using the history of the evolution of the Association, one is able to identify the under currents that influenced the achivists that also explain the disciplinary changes. Particular attention was paid to the ups and downs of the financial picture as well as the shifts in internal power, underscoring the factors in the progressive hierarching in archives. This dynamic flows from a quest to be efficient, the administration of the AAQ and the need to be cost effective. Over the course of the last 50 years, the Association has always sought to adapt to change, in spite of the challenges, and to stay close to its founding mission : to promote and defend the interests of archives, archivists and archival science. This new outlook on the history of the AAQ underscores the conditions necessary to maintain the cohesiveness of the Association des archivistes du Québec.
L’Association des archivistes du Québec (AAQ), en tant que regroupement de professionnels, a fortement marqué la discipline archivistique au cours de ses 50 années d’existence. Cette influence a déjà été étudiée à l’aune de la perspective disciplinaire. En s’appuyant plutôt sur l’évolution de l’organisation interne de l’Association, on découvre des dynamiques sous-jacentes à l’évolution de la perception des professions de l’archivistique qui expliquent aussi des changements disciplinaires. Une attention particulière portée aux aléas financiers et aux changements à la distribution du pouvoir au sein de l’organisation montre les facteurs qui président à la hiérarchisation progressive du champ archivistique. Cette dynamique découle à la fois d’une quête d’efficience des membres et de l’administration de l’AAQ et d’un impératif de rentabilité imposé par le contexte social québécois. Au travers des aléas de ces 50 ans d’activité, on découvre une Association qui a toujours su s’adapter au changement, malgré les grands défis qu’il représente, et maintenir l’objectif défini à sa naissance : promouvoir et défendre les intérêts des archives, des archivistes et de l’archivistique. Ce nouvel éclairage jeté sur l’histoire de l’AAQ permet finalement de rappeler certaines conditions du maintien de la cohésion de l’Association des archivistes du Québec.
