Este artículo analiza importantes pendientes en materia de democracia y derechos humanos en Myanmar, país que ha experimentado una indudable y reciente transformación que le ha recolocado como un importante actor del sudeste asiático, lugar que obtiene a partir de su importancia geopolítica y geoestratégica, pero que había sido obviada debido al tiránico régimen militar que gobernó desde 1962 hasta 2011, anulando cualquier práctica democrática y violando sistemáticamente los derechos humanos. Son evidentes sus esfuerzos hacia la normalidad democrática y la reinserción en el escenario internacional, pero no sufi cientes; y no atenderles podría conducir a una nueva crisis en un país que algunos analistas señalan está llamado a ser un nuevo “tigre” de la región
This article seeks to analyze, beyond the restrictions or institutional incentives, the conditions This article analyses important pending issues regarding democracy and human rights in Myanmar. The country has recently and unquestionably experienced a transformation that has reinstated it as an important Southeast Asian actor. Its prominence arises from its geopolitical and geostrategic importance, however, Myanmar had been overlooked because of the military regime that tyrannically ruled from 1962 to 2011, voiding any democratic exercise and systematically violating human rights. Although eff orts towards democratic normality and to reincorporate the country to international stage are evident, they are not suffi cient and not addressing them could lead to a new crisis in a country that some analysts say is called to be the new “tiger” of the region.
