Renovados criterios teórico metodológicos desde lo interdisciplinar dan cuenta de una historia social que explica comportamientos y actitudes dentro de un espacio plural, relacional en el cual se entrecruzan intereses que definen redes de relaciones de poder y amistad, clientela, negocios y parentescos. Este trabajo estudia el contexto que rodeo la designación de los gobernadores de la provincia de Maracaibo entre 1787 y 1812. La atención se centra en identificar su condición genealógica: su lugar de origen y procedencia, quiénes eran, cómo y cuándo llegaron a Maracaibo, su ascendencia, su descendencia, linaje, títulos y órdenes solicitadas o concedidas. Se demuestra que dichos funcionarios calificados para el cumplimiento de funciones militares y político-administrativas, fueron beneficiados y beneficiarios de unas prácticas que exaltaban deberes y derechos en correspondencia con la lealtad y la subordinación. Se concluye que la red de alianzas les garantizó por una parte, su designación como máxima autoridad política provincial; por la otra, el disfrute e intercambio de servicios y privilegios.
Renewed theoretical and methodological criteria from an interdisciplinary perspective give account of a social history that explains behavior and attitudes within a plural relational space in which interests that define kinship, business, patronage and friendship networks of relationship and power cross and interconnect. This paper studies the context that surrounded the appointment of governors in the province of Maracaibo from 1787 to 1812. Particular attention is paid to identifying their genealogy: who they were, where they were from, when and how they arrived in Maracaibo and their lineage, as well as titles and orders requested or granted. I will demostrate that these colonial rulers selected to perform military or political/administrative functions were benefited by practices that exalted rights and duties that were a function loyalty and subordination. In sum, the network of alliances mentioned above led to their appointment as provincial rulers with the enjoyment and exchange of services and privileges that accompany the exercise of power.
