    While the theology of icons was based on a christological justification, the augustinian doctrine of image is based on the image of the divine essence, common to the Trinity. Therefore, the image is a fiction, freely made up by the human mind, when he interprets Scripture. This theory paves the way to the freedom of the medieval artist.

    Tandis que la théologie de l’icône reposait sur une justification christologique, la doctrine augustinienne de l’image repose sur une image de l’essence divine, commune à la Trinité. Ainsi, l’image est une fiction, construite librement par l’esprit humain, à l’occasion de l’interprétation de l’Écriture. Cette doctrine ouvre la voie à la liberté de l’artiste médiéval.
