El Archivo de la Corona de Aragón (A.C.A.) es una de las instituciones archivísticas más antiguas de Europa. Fue fundado en Barcelona en 1318 por el rey Jaime II como depósito central de una de las primeras monarquías compuestas, después de las reformas realizadas en la Cancillería real. Desde entonces no ha interrumpido jamás su actividad, dedicado a la conservación y enriquecimiento de la documentación que custodia. En 2018, cumplirá 700 años de vida, lo que constituye una efeméride importante para los archivos españoles. Con ese motivo, en este artículo se hace una síntesis de sus orígenes e historia. Se describen sus fondos documentales y se resalta su interés para la Historia de Europa, por su dimensión transnacional.
Se expone su gestión actual y se describen sus sedes. Finalmente, se realizan unas perspectivas de futuro en relación con la concesión del Sello del Patrimonio Europeo en el año 2015. Se cierra con una bibliografía sucinta.
The Archives of the Crown of Aragon (A.C.A.) is one of the most ancient archival institutions of Europe. It was founded in Barcelona in 1318 by King James II. It was created as central repository of one of the first composed monarchies, after the Royal Chancery’s reforms.
Since that moment, ACA has not ceased its activity, conserving and enriching the documentation that owns. In 2018, ACA will be 700 years old, which is an important hit for Spanish archives. For this reason, the present article reviews its origins and history.
Furthermore, we describe the collections and point out the relevance for the History of Europe due to its transnational dimension. In addition, the current management and the building are discussed. Finally, we provide future perspectives related to the European Heritage Label (EHL), awarded in 2015. Succinct literature is enclosed at the end of the article.
