El principal objetivo del presente trabajo es reconocer y analizar la presencia tanto de gitanos como de ciertos elementos provenientes de su cultura en la pintura religiosa europea durante los siglos XVI y XVII.
Para ello estableceremos previamente un modelo interpretativo de tipo indicial basado en cuatro criterios de identificación (rasgos físicos, indumentaria, acción y ubicación). La interpretación de dichos elementos por parte de la tradición pictórica occidental tenía una doble vertiente: estética o moral, tal y como comprobaremos a través de una selección de pinturas del Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento.
The main objective of this work is to identify and analyze the presence of gypsies and certain elements from their culture in European religious painting in the 16th and 17th centuries. In order to do that we will use four identification criteria (physical features, clothing, action and setting). Traditionally the Western pictorial tradition interpreted those elements according either to their aesthetic or their moral value, as we will see through a selection of paitings from the Old and New Testament.
