El Código civil chileno de Andrés Bello constituye uno de los ejemplos codificadores americanos por antonomasia, cuyo ámbito de irradiación puede dibujarse trazando tres círculos concéntricos: el más próximo, de adopción; el segundo, de dependencia; y, finalmente, un tercero, de impacto. En otras palabras, estamos hablando del cuerpo legal que ejerció más influencia en toda América Latina, con una repercusión comparable a la que en su día representó el Code civil francés en el ámbito europeo, hasta el punto de poder atribuirle entre sus excelsas virtudes la de erigirse en factor decisivo para la continuidad de la tradición jurídica romanista en tierras americanas tras la emancipación y fin del periodo colonial.
