El análisis de la globalización nos muestra la influencia de las religiones en el sistema-mundo. Tienen una gran capacidad para crear identidades colectivas. Este hecho no acontece solo en la periferia del sistema-mundo, sino también en los países centrales de éste, dada la creciente inmigración y el arraigo en ellos de comunidades con fuertes identidades cívicas, especialmente las islámicas. El neotradicionalismo y la modernización son los ámbitos en los que se desarrollan las diversas identidades religiosas que se diferencian por su aceptación o rechazo de la modernidad. En algunos países son fuentes de conflicto y en otros factores de cambios social y cultural. El enfrentamiento o la cooperación entre identidades religiosas y no religiosas afecta a la configuración de la democracia. Solo una cultura y unas instituciones configuradas por la laicidad pueden contribuir a que el poder de las identidades sirva a la convivencia de una ciudadanía diversa y no se convierta en un potente obstáculo para el desarrollo del pluralismo.
The analysis of globalization reveals the social influence that religions exert on the world-system. They have a great capacity for creating collective identities. This reality exists not only in the periphery of the world-system but also in the core of countries. This is true as a result of the rise in immigration and the establishment of communities with strong civic identities, especially Islamic ones. These diverse religious identities develop in the realms of neo-traditionalism and modernization and differ in terms of whether they reject or accept the tenets of modernity. In some countries they are sources of conflict, while in others, they are forces for social and cultural change. The existence of a dynamic of confrontation or cooperation between religious and non-religious identities affects the configuration of democracy. Only a culture and an ensemble of institutions shaped by laicism can help ensure that the influence of such identities contribute to the social harmony of a diverse citizenship and thus prevent it from becoming a powerful obstacle for the development of pluralism.
