El panorama de la mujer en España en el siglo XIX se cuestiona de forma permanente debido a que su papel estaba condicionado a ser pilar fundamental de la familia, así como transmisora de la fe y otros elementos indispensables en la denominada educación de adorno. Sin embargo, no debemos de olvidar la importancia de muchas de estas mujeres, que siendo anfitrionas en sus casas, se convierten también en transmisoras de cultura en una sociedad marcada por un alto índice de analfabetismo, como fue el caso de España.
The outlook of women in the 19th Century in Spain is being reviewed constantly due to the fact that their role was destined to be that of the basic pillar of the family as well as that of passing on religious faith and other indispensable elements of the so-called “accomplished woman’s education”. However, we should not forget the importance of many of these women who, whilst being hostesses in their own homes, were also to become purveyors of culture in a society marked by a high rate of illiteracy.
