A review of Sweden and the Revival of the Capitalist Welfare State by Andreas Bergh is presented. Sweden has often been depicted as this unique nation that undermines theories on economic development by showing that big government and a generous welfare state are reconcilable with economic flourishing. This makes the nation a seeming paradox provoking the sentiments of people on different sides of the ideological spectrum. There is a great need for a fact-based discussion to solve the conundrum Sweden. This is exactly what Bergh contributes to with his book. Bergh begins the book by presenting evidence that this period of accelerated economic growth is attributed to the enforcement of institutions that economist know to be crucial for growth. Bergh closes his book with a discussion on the main problems and the future threats to the Swedish system.
