Investiga si existe algún grado de asociación estadística entre el Índice de Desarrollo Humano (IDH) a nivel local y el abstencionismo electoral a nivel municipal para las elecciones de alcalde del 2010 en Costa Rica, usando datos a nivel de cantón como unidad geográfica de análisis. Primero, expone brevemente la importancia que tiene la política a nivel local para el desarrollo de la calidad de vida de la población, con lo cual justifica la importancia del estudio. Seguidamente, se presenta de forma resumida los enfoques teóricos y conceptos relacionados con el abstencionismo utilizados en el trabajo. Luego de esto, se estudia la relación entre el IDH cantonal y el abstencionismo, tanto para las elecciones municipales de alcalde como para las presidenciales (nacionales). Lo anterior con el objetivo de comprobar si la población tiene una percepción diferenciada de los mecanismos democráticos a escala local y a escala nacional y que afecta directamente su nivel y calidad de vida. Finalmente, se presenta algunas consideraciones con respecto a esta última relación
It investigates whether there is a certain degree of statistical association between the Human Development Index (HDI), at a local level, and the electoral abstentionism, at the municipal level, for the 2010 Elections for Mayor in Costa Rica, using data from counties as a geographical unit of analysis. First, it briefly presents the relevance that politics, at a local level, has for the development of the quality of life of the population, which justifies the relevance of the study. Then, it presents a summary of the theoretical approaches and concepts related to abstentionism that are used in this work. After this, it studies the relation between the county HDI and abstentionism for municipal elections for Mayor as well as for Presidential elections (national). The latter is done with the aim of verifying if the population has a differentiated perception of the democratic mechanisms at a local and national levels and which directly affects their level and quality of life. Finally, it presents some considerations in regard to this latter relation
