• Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe and discuss challenges for repository libraries.

  Design/methodology/approach – Critical analysis of current provisions.

  Findings – Print repositories are undergoing tremendous change as their role is not limited anymore to a remote store for frozen collections. They innovate, reinventing themselves, in order to be changed into a key player in streamlining the management of printed material, especially less used materials.

  Originality/value – Identifies five areas of collaboration.
