Denunciation. The distinction between individual and collective action is one of the fundamental oppositions underlying (often implicitly, because it is so much taken for granted) the sociology and the social history of modes of protest. It also serves, more generally, to distinguish between the objects of psychology and those of sociology. This article endeavours to outline a problematic aimed at overcoming this opposition, by establishingagrammar making it possible to interpret, by means of the same rules, the variations found in actsof protest depending on whether they are presented as «individual» or «collective» acts, and also the judgements of normality that other people apply to them. This problematic is contructed by reference to acts of public denunciation. Statistical and stylistic analysis of a corpus of letters of denunciation received by a major newspaper makes it possible to provide a first series of answers to two questions : What conditions must a public denunciation fulfil in order to be judged normal ? and what makes a person perform an act of public denunciation which has every likelihood of being seen as ab normal ?
