Each year, a large number of attractive science books are published, many of which have the power not only to extend knowledge but also to excite the interest and imagination of children and young people. Encouraging pupils to engage with these texts may also develop a lifelong reading habit. The active promotion of science reading for pleasure, however, is not often a feature of the secondary science curriculum. This article describes a project which, though based in public libraries, nonetheless suggests a number of approaches that could be adopted in schools for motivating pupils to read science books for enjoyment.
