La editorial Quimantú marcó un antes y un después respecto al consumo y producción de libros. Su propuesta, parte del programa del presidente Salvador Allende, tenía por propósito llevar la cultura al mundo popular, permitiendo particularmente en la colección Nosotros los chilenos, que la imagen del chileno medio se apreciara a sí mismo de otro modo. Tras el Golpe Militar del año 1973, la dictadura se apropió de los talleres de la editorial, tratando de instalar en el imaginario social una nueva idea, bajo la denominada editorial Gabriela Mistral, sustituyendo su principal iconografía por otra, que intentaba implantar el ideario del nuevo régimen.
